Alistair Darling sees expanding broadband as 'vital to ensure the entire country and economy benefits from the digital age'. He wants 'virtually' every household in the UK to get at least 2Mbps broadband by 2012. At the moment it is estimated that between 1 and 2 million households can not get broadband at that speed. However the next generation of 40Mbps broadband was also announced for 1.2 million people in Yorkshire widening the digital gap again.
